Sendai airport when it was flooded from the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake (and Tsunami) and one month later when the airport was back in operation. According to their national progress report on the implementing the HFA, Japan sees the following DRR activities for their future, especially following lessons they learned from the Earthquake:
- To “disaster-proof” land and community, make markets more resilient to disasters, and develop the capacity citizens - basically to invest more in disaster prevention.
- Involve different actors, from citizens and communities to public authorities in reducing disaster risks, including educating and engaging youth.
- Reinforce structural measures to deal with unexpected disasters, and non-structural measures such as city design, land utilization policy, evacuation alert measure, and disaster prevention drills.
- For the future post-2015 DRR framewok to focus on actions that clearly indicates “by when” “to what extent” “how” measures can be carried out.
