Disaster Risk Reduction in Nepal

Thanks to http://un.org.np/coordinationmechanism/nrrc for blogging with us! An example on how to coordinate to reduce disaster risks to discuss at this year’s Global Platform…

In February 2011, the Government of Nepal launched the Nepal Risk Reduction Consortium (NRRC). The NRRC is a unique body that unites the Government, the international financial institutions of the Asian Development Bank and World Bank, development partners and donors, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and the United Nations.

The NRRC works to bridge the spectrum of activity of development and humanitarian expertise, supporting the Government to implement a long term Disaster Risk Reduction Action Plan.  The work of the NRRC builds on Nepal’s National Strategy for Disaster Risk Management (NSDRM), which was approved in 2009.

Following the approval of the NSDRM, and discussion by multi-stakeholder groups based on Government priorities, five Flagship areas of immediate action for disaster risk reduction (DRR) in Nepal were identified:

1) School and Hospital Safety

2) Emergency Preparedness and Response

3) Flood Management in the Kosi River Basin

4) Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction

5) Policy/Institutional Support for Disaster Risk Management

Each of these flagship areas are coordinated by an international agency and government ministry.

For more information, follow the NRRC on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn or watch our YouTube videos
