2016 HABITAT III : urban planning agenda for the 21st century

Building Resilience into urban planning and investments (part1)

Today’s event on building resilience into urban planning and investments started in a good mood despite the serious topic that was going to be discussed at room 3 of the CICG.

Half of world population is currently living in cities and two-third by 2030. With this explosive demographic growth prediction, the discussion was definitely looking at the future of urbanization and related challenges. In fact, urban planning is a one the key element in making liveable spaces.

With increase of population in urban areas as well as intensification of natural disasters, cities are becoming more vulnerable.  Metropolises are facing overpopulation and uncontrolled urbanization, putting its inhabitants at risk. “Tomorrow’s cities must embed Disaster Risk Reduction” underlined Joan Clos Secretary-General and Executive-director of UN-Habitat.

There is a need to change urbanization models. Today’s urban planning is based on a vision coming from the 30’s ! The 20th century thinking in building cannot be applied to 21st century reality. The old model should be review, so it is possible to shift into an updated model adapted to nowadays preoccupation.

In this perspective, the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) will take place in 2016. Discussions will review the state of urban planning and generate a new urban agenda. The goal is to encourage planning of greener, more resilient and liveable cities.  Countries commitments will be examined. The declaration of Istanbul or Habitat II was signed by 78 countries, more participants and nations are expected to join the Habitat III conference.
